August 2010 Index Report:
(Sept. report released on Sep. 23, 2010)
Chicago, IL – Private company revenue data for the month of July show a 5% decline in gross revenues across a broad group of industry sectors. This dip in follows two consecutive months of month-over-month revenue growth and is the second largest period of decline seen this calendar year. (See graph at right.)
Analysts point out that in the five year history of the index a decline in revenues this period is not uncommon. In fact, in 2006 and 2007 the same pattern appeared and was followed by subsequent revenue gains that brought the index to its highest point of the calendar year. 2008 and 2009 were both against that trend, but analysts site that August and September still followed the anticipated growth patterns those years. (See lower graph at right.)
During this last period the public capital market indicators (DJIA, Nasdaq Composite, and S&P Small Cap 600) were each up 6-7% following two months of negative performance. Analysts theorize that extended negative stock market performance could be a leading indicator for lower gross business revenues, but there is not enough conclusive data to fully assert this. Analysts remain positive that the PCI will rise to meet a 12-month gain of around 31%--the index's five year historical annual performance.
